Acts of Service, Mass Impact

I’m honored to introduce this edition of Voices AMplified that features two leaders in 3D printing and additive manufacturing (AM)—Nicole McMinn and William Cuervo. They both have made significant contributions that reach far beyond the AM community.

As a biomedical engineer with the renowned Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, McMinn combines digital technology and AM to 3D print prostheses, implants, and other medical devices and models to improve patient care. Along with a staff of seven and a dozen machines, Nicole plays a crucial role in successful outcomes, from digital concept to physical product—all while pursuing her passion.

Speaking of which, you’ll also learn about William, who always wanted to serve his country. In his role as head of the U.S. Navy’s Advanced Manufacturing Center of Excellence, he does just that. Like many who wind up in AM, he didn’t set out to work in manufacturing. In fact, he was studying political science at the Military College of Vermont when a project exposed him to emerging threats to the U.S., which fueled his desire to help warfighters. This led to his fascinating journey into advanced manufacturing at 3YourMind, and allowed him to combine his passion and experience in service to his country.

The contributions of Nicole and William demonstrate the tangible, human impact of AM, which impacts us all in different ways and in many industries, from automotive and aerospace to medical and fashion.

I am also lucky to have my dream job, made possible through AM. As co-founder of TheFutureofJewelry, I can leverage my passions for design and technology to create something tangible and beautiful for people, bringing custom jewelry to the masses. We launched a 3D Jewelry Customization Platform where people can design and create custom signet rings. We added a feature where people can download the stl file of a ring to print on their own printer for just $5. Through continuous innovation, something that was only available to a few is now available to all thanks to AM.

We hope you enjoy this edition of Voices AMplified, and we encourage you to share more stories from the AM community of those who positively impact peoples’ lives.
