Machine tool orders fell in October on both a monthly and year-over-year basis, AMT – The Association for Manufacturing Technology said today.

Orders for the month totaled $457.7 million, the McLean, Va.-based group said in a report. That was down 12 percent from an adjusted $517.7 million in September and 20 percent from $570.1 million in October 2021.

AMT said the October figure still represented a strong result. On a monthly basis, the decline compares to a month with IMTS, the mammoth trade show AMT produces. On a year-over-year basis, the October figure compares to a strong result in 2021.

“Orders for manufacturing technology continue to come in at a near-record pace,” Douglas K. Woods, AMT’s president, said in a statement. “October 2022 was the third-highest October on record. Typically, orders in an October after an IMTS are down 23 percent from the previous month. Orders are returning to normal seasonal trends, but at an elevated level.”

For the first 10 months of the year, orders totaled $4.67 billion, AMT said. That was 0.1 percent better from the same period in 2021.

The figures are from companies participating in AMT’s U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders (USMTO) program.

AMT said construction machinery manufacturers saw a surge in orders in October while orders from makers of heating, ventilation and air condition systems as well as appliances slid.
