Orders for durable goods increased in April, paced by defense aircraft and parts, the Commerce Department reported May 26.
Orders gained $3.1 billion, or 1.1%, to $283 billion. The increase followed an adjusted monthly rise of 3.3% in March.
Excluding transportation, orders slipped 0.2%. Excluding defense, orders fell 0.6%.
The overall transportation category posted a monthly increase of 3.7% to $97.6 billion. Within transportation, orders for defense aircraft surged 33% to $7.7 billion.
Orders for motor vehicles and parts slipped 0.1% to $61.3 billion. Orders for commercial aircraft and parts fell 8.3% to $15.4 billion.
In other categories, orders for machinery increased 1% to $37.5 billion. Orders for fabricated metal products were virtually unchanged at $35.5 billion. Orders for primary metals slipped 0.5% to $26.7 billion.
