United Airlines has taken a significant step towards advancing sustainable aviation practices with its recent investment in Electric Power Systems (EPS), a prominent provider of electrified aviation powertrains. This strategic move reflects United Airlines' commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, aligning with industry-wide efforts to foster more eco-friendly air travel.

EPS's battery technology is designed with a modular approach, offering enhanced flexibility and safety for various aviation applications. This unique feature allows EPS to cater its modules to support different battery types, presenting United Airlines with a range of opportunities to integrate sustainable solutions into its operations.

Michael Leskinen, president of United Airlines Ventures, stated, "United's commitment to net zero carbon emissions by 2050 includes exploring EPS's portfolio of electric aircraft powertrain solutions, high-performance power electronics, and energy storage systems."

EPS envisions an integrated ecosystem for aviation, encompassing aircraft packs and ground charging stations. This approach aims to strike a balance between cost-effectiveness and rapid charging capabilities while preserving battery life—a crucial factor for the success of electric aviation.

"United's investment will enable us to scale our operations and expedite the development of our cutting-edge powertrain solutions. Together, we aim to revolutionize air travel and contribute to a more sustainable future for the industry," said Nathan Millecam, CEO of Electric Power Systems.

United Airlines plans to explore various applications for EPS's technology, including potential deployment in its pilot training academy, Aviate, as well as supporting electric ground equipment, electric air taxis, and electrifying auxiliary power unit (APU) start products.

As part of its broader commitment to environmental sustainability, United Airlines has introduced several initiatives, such as the UAV Sustainable Flight FundSM, the Eco-Skies Alliance, and United Airlines VenturesSM—a venture fund dedicated to investing in sustainable aviation technologies.

The partnership between United Airlines and Electric Power Systems marks a significant stride in the aviation industry's collective efforts towards sustainability. As electric aviation gains momentum, collaborative initiatives like this have the potential to make a lasting impact on reducing the industry's environmental footprint.
