It’s natural this time of year to look back as intently as we look forward. For the past several months, I’ve been fortunate to speak with current and future leaders across the manufacturing spectrum, from CEOs and engineers to students and professors. Each expressed a passion for making things that matter and sharing what they know to help inspire others.
To be sure, 2022 gave us a lot to talk about. From technology and talent to supply chain and cybersecurity, trends that were top of mind for manufacturers look to continue in the year ahead. Smart Manufacturing will cover these and other topics in future issues, and we look forward to sharing insights, best practices, and lessons learned from manufacturers big and small that give us a glimpse into their world.
We’re also excited to continue our Voices AMplified series that showcases the depth and breadth of individuals and knowledge within the additive manufacturing (AM) ecosystem, including SME’s AM community leaders and advisors.
This issue features some great stories to close out the year. Kip Hanson’s take on sustainable manufacturing, “Moving Past People, Planet, Profit,” provides a holistic look at the achievable gains manufacturers can earn through better technology, processes, and standards. Brad Marley contributes two features in this issue. The first unveils the real impact of artificial intelligence in manufacturing, debunking myths and offering use cases for how to employ smart digital strategies that move the needle. The second article takes a deep dive into the power and pervasiveness of event-based vision systems that marry technology and biology to increase efficiency, productivity, and quality across manufacturing.
We look forward to introducing new topics and new takes on tried-and-true topics in 2023. If there is something you’d like to see covered, or have an idea for a contributed article, I look forward to connecting.
Until then, enjoy!
