United Airlines will donate $1.25 million to DonorsChoose to fund aviation, and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) projects in Chicago, Denver, Washington, D.C., New York, Houston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and across Hawaii, the company announced Friday.
"Whether it's using model planes to teach middle schoolers the dynamics of flight or taking a field trip to see how a simulator works, we're proud to help teachers get the resources to inspire the next generation of aviators," notes Josh Earnest, United's senior vice president and chief communications officer.
DonorsChoose is a nonprofit crowdfunding platform for public school teachers seeking funds for school supplies and other program expenses. Projects are vetted and the cost of requested resources are verified by DonorsChoose. More than 90,000 projects are currently listed on the website, including one designated “Help Feed Low Income Students: Help me give my students healthy snacks to boost their energy and offer needed nutrition,” and another called “Clean and Classy: Help me give my students a clean and supply-filled classroom this year.”
United says its contribution will fund all aviation classroom projects currently posted on DonorsChoose, and any remaining funds will be used for more aviation and STEM-focused projects in coming months. There are currently more than 26,000 STEM projects posted on DonorsChoose. Teachers can submit a project to be considered for funding at donorschoose.org/teachers.
"United Airlines is helping classrooms launch into the new school year, with resources that will help aviation and STEM students thrive," asserts Alix Guerrier, CEO of DonorsChoose. "Through this campaign, United Airlines is empowering youth who are tomorrow's scientists, aviators and engineers. This partnership will foster the beginnings of future careers."
