Every first Friday of October, the entire SME organization celebrates Manufacturing Day, joining thousands of companies across North America in demonstrating the power of modern manufacturing and myriad career opportunities for the next generation of skilled workers. This year I had the pleasure of participating in programs that honor the best and brightest in manufacturing.
I met Kayla Jordan, systems engineer at L3Harris, who is recognized as a future leader in manufacturing as a 2022 SME 30 Under 30 recipient. Kayla participated in a recent Shop Talk focused on “Celebrating Careers in Manufacturing.” Five years out of university, Kayla is already blazing her own path and paving the way for other women and people of color in manufacturing. Connecting with fellow trailblazers is a critical piece in establishing tangible career paths and role models for the next generation of skilled workers, and Kayla is a shining example.
This issue of Smart Manufacturing celebrates next-gen leaders with features about bridging the skills gap, and we share an example of how Siemens is using an apprenticeship concept proven in Germany to strengthen the connection between industry and education in the U.S. Another feature provides a compelling view of the evolution of the digital supply chain that requires a shift from price to partnerships. We also reveal ways manufacturers can achieve automated customization through the effective use of robots and modern additive manufacturing. And don’t miss the profile of MxD as part of our Manufacturing USA spotlight series. You’ll learn how cybersecurity and workforce development are critical priorities for the future of U.S. manufacturing, and we hope you’ll discover new resources and practical guidance to help solve some of your own challenges.
There’s much to celebrate in October, well beyond the first Friday of the month. We hope you enjoy this issue, and we look forward to seeing you in December. Enjoy!
