Machine tool orders reached their highest levels for January, AMT – The Association for Manufacturing Technology said today.

Orders totaled $436.6 million for the month, AMT said. That was 27 percent lower than an adjusted $596.3 million for December 2021. But the January figure was 33 percent higher than the year earlier $327.9 million.

On a monthly basis, January orders typically decline from December, which often benefits from companies making orders before year’s end.

The figures are from companies participating in AMT’s U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders (USMTO) program.

“We expected to see a substantial decrease” for January, Douglas K. Woods, AMT’s president, said in a statement. “Recording the best January on record is a welcome sign that the strength of the manufacturing technology market will continue into 2022.”

AMT said in 2021 machine tool orders were bolstered by sectors producing final consumer goods. The McLean, Va.-based group said January saw a shift “closer to the raw material process.”

“This shift in industrial demand indicates that entire manufacturing supply chains are being brought back to the United States,” Woods said. “Long term, the broad industrial base created by concentrated supply chains is a huge positive for the manufacturing technology industry and the economy as a whole.”
