IMTS Returns as an In-Person Event After Four Years

The International Manufacturing Technology Show, better known as IMTS, is back in its full in-person glory after a four-year hiatus.

On its website, the show is described as “where the creators, the builders, the sellers, and the d rivers of manufacturing technology come to connect and be inspired.”

The biennial event was last held in 2018 at its usual home in Chicago. In 2020, IMTS was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2022, IMTS is making a return to Chicago’s mammoth McCormick Place. The mega-event, which is put on by Virginia-based AMT (The Association for Manufacturing Technology), is one of the main events for the machine tool industry and is a forum for introducing the latest products and technologies.

IMTS is different from other big industry events. At auto shows, for example, new models are introduced that won’t be reaching dealer lots for months. With IMTS, exhibitors are selling machines on the show floor. By the end of IMTS, there will be “sold” stickers over many of the machines on display.

This issue of Manufacturing Engineering is the first of two that look at what IMTS attendees can expect with the show’s return.

The show is organized as a series of pavilions—with more than 2,000 booths—including:

  • Abrasive Machining/ Sawing/Finishing
  • Additive Manufacturing
  • Controls & CAD-CAM
  • Fabricating & Lasers
  • Gear Generation
  • Machine Components/Cleaning /Environmental
  • Metal Removal
  • Quality Assurance
  • Tooling & Workholding Systems

There is also a co-located Hanover Messe area.

In this issue, we highlight four pavilions and their products: Fabrication & Lasers; Gear Generation; Machine Components/Cleaning/Environmental; and Quality Assurance.
