Hope and Solutions for Employers: The Smartforce Student Summit at IMTS

Employers looking for on-the-job training (OJT) solutions can find them by exploring the Smartforce Student Summit at IMTS 2022.

Reaching the Summit

I would like to personally invite all who are going to IMTS to visit machine tool builders, automation companies, software developers, and metrology experts to also schedule time to take a spin through the Smartforce Student Summit. I promise all visitors to the Summit will come away with something positive, helpful, and practical that can be applied in their own factories and shops.

At NIMS, it’s a whole new way of thinking about how to transfer knowledge across an organization. And, wow, isn’t that what manufacturers need most right now? In my experience, they need this even more than the “next cool thing.” We all know this: Our legacy people are retiring while manufacturing technology is changing at an astoundingly rapid rate.

For instance, a company might be making the same part today that it has for the last 20 years. Maybe the design hasn’t changed much. But how it’s being made certainly has. And those methods and processes keep evolving, keep continuously improving so that companies can remain competitive, maintain, and even improve profit margins.

Next-Gen Solutions

Now there’s about to be an explosion surrounding data-driven, smart manufacturing. We’re just at the beginning of Industry 4.0 right now. How in the world can we take advantage of the advancements and movement toward that if there aren’t enough people who know what they are doing in that realm, let alone understand the fundamentals of making parts?

Employers need to get employees up to speed quickly—much faster than the classic two- or four-year training model. Just speaking for what we are presenting in the Summit, we have Smart Training Solutions designed and proven to do just that, and I’d love to talk to visitors about it. It’s a training framework for any manufacturer because it is designed around that company’s parts and what its employees need to know. There are other Summit exhibitors that have different offerings for employers, fun activities for students, and presentations for educators, too, of course. If nothing else, it does a heart good to see young people walking around, taking in the wares, and getting excited about manufacturing careers.

So, when you are going from booth to booth, checking off must-see exhibitors—which likely are offering some way to increase your productivity—remember to think about who is going to run it, program it, monitor it, measure it, and give you the return you are seeking. Even the most automated factory in the world needs people. If that trained person is lacking or missing when you ask yourself that question as you are looking at the latest and greatest piece of technology at IMTS 2022, come see all of us in the Smartforce Student Summit at IMTS 2022. There are solutions!
