Sandvik Coromant has opened a new U.S. manufacturing center and placed its U.S. headquarters at the facility.
The center is in Mebane, N.C., amid that state’s Research Triangle of North Carolina State University, Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
“It’s great to be in Mebane,” Sean Holt, president of sales Americas for Sandvik Coromant, said during an online presentation today. “Mebane is quickly attracting big manufacturing companies.”
The executive said the area has drawn companies from various industries including from the aerospace and automotive industries.
Sandvik Coromant first opened a facility at the site in 1980. The complex has been expanded twice since then.
The center will be used for training, research and development testing, and engagement programs between the company and its customers.
“It is a real state of the art center,” Holt said. “The goal of the center is to get as many customers here” as possible.” Besides in-person training, other Sandvik Coromant centers “are all digitally linked” with the North Carolina complex.
“It’s a great way to reach customers in a digital way as well,” he said. Sandvik Coromant has 17 centers in Europe, the Americas and Asia.
The North Carolina complex permits Sandvik Coromant customers “to fully interact with the latest technology and digital machining techniques, including Sandvik Coromant’s CoroPlus,” the company said in a statement.
Customers can also work together with Sandvik Coromant experts, including manufacturing specialists, development and process engineers and CAM programmers to develop new ways of overcoming machining challenges, according to the company.
The center’s opening reflects what the North American market means for Sandvik Coromant.
“North America is very much a top priority for us,” Helen Blomqvist, president of Sandvik Coromant, said during the presentation.
