Turkish tool maker Turcar took top honors in ANCA’s fourth Tool of the Year competition, topping a field of 37 entrants to win the Tool of the Year and Virtual Tool of the Year categories.

Turcar won the main Made on ANCA Tool of Year category by demonstrating its design skills in manufacturing a cutting tool on ANCA equipment; it earned the virtual tool prize by using ANCA software to design a fighter jet.

ANCA’s Tool of the Year competition, held at EMO Milano 2021, celebrated the impact and achievements of the global cutting tool industry and drew almost 8,500 votes.

“Turcar was recognized for its fully functional tool with axial and radial cutting features to machine five independent operations,” said judge Thomson Mathew. “(It is) an exceptional tool design that can produce its part in a single setup on the machine.” In the virtual category, he added, Turcar won for its “brilliant display of creativity by manipulating ANCA's iGrind tool grinding software and CIM 3D tool verification software. A total of 61 operations were used to simulate a fighter jet model.”

Turcar reprised its 2020 win in the virtual tool category.

“This competition has really been a defining experience for many people at Turcar,” said Rauf Ötzürk, managing director of Turcar. “After last year’s success and learning experience, we really wanted to take a step further this time. We collected ideas from all over the company and received many ideas for both categories.”

Second in the Made on ANCA category was FANAR; third place went to ARCH Cutting Tools.

“The excitement at ANCA has been intense in the lead-up to the winner announcement, and I have enjoyed a fantastic feeling of pride when evaluating the entries,” said ANCA cofounder Pat Boland. “The aim of the award is to recognize the incredible creativity in our cutting tool industry, (which) underpins all of manufacturing.”

In the virtual tool category, Japanese tool maker Kojima won second prize by creating a colorful Tokyo Sky Tree, and Turkish company Rtech placed third for its simulated image of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

ANCA’s annual competition gives cutting tool manufacturers a chance to not only build brand recognition within the industry, but to also “push the boundaries and showcase the beauty and performance expected from ANCA machines in the cutting tools industry,” the company explained.

Turcar won both top prizes: $10,000 AUD worth of ANCA parts, accessories or software for Tool of the Year, and the full CIM software package for most innovative virtual tool.
