Four manufacturing industry leaders discuss how smart manufacturing is disrupting the supply chain

(SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Oct. 28) —  While the manufacturing industry learns to deal with COVID-19, it is also undergoing seismic change from other critical issues. Four industry leaders take on these issues in a panel discussion titled, “How Smart Manufacturing is Disrupting the Supply Chain - Are You Prepared?” which be held virtually on Thursday, Oct. 29 from 12:30 to 1:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time at The Best of SMX Virtual Event, a one-day event that can be accessed through the website.

At the panel, Berardino Baratta, VP of Projects & Engineering for MxD; Marilyn T. Gaska, PhD LM Fellow, Logistics and Sustainment Office of the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for Lockheed Martin; Joel Neidig, CEO and Co-founder of SIMBA Chain; and Vicki Holt, President & CEO of Protolabs will discuss the top technology challenges impacting the supply chain, how to prioritize these challenges, and the security concerns of data sharing. The session is sponsored by LIFT (Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow).

In a preview of the session, panelists discussed some of the key themes. According to Protolab’s Holt, there are many risks for manufacturers to take on. “We’re dealing with geopolitical and tariff risk, dealing with climate change risk, we’re dealing with the pandemic,” she said. “All of that is requiring manufacturers to really analyze their supply chain and see where there are areas of risk that would impact their ability to continue to service customers. And with the digitization that is taking place, cybersecurity is critical because everything is connected, all the way from design through to commercialization and even commerce and quality. All of that risk in the external environment is requiring manufactures to think about ‘how do I fortify the supply chain?’”
