The Grand Opening was preceded on Thursday, May 9, by SCHUNK’s Technology Day. An annual industry event, “Tech Day” featured exhibits and presentations from SCHUNK and partner companies on a variety of topics concerning the manufacturing and robotics industries. Presenters include Titans of CNC, Association for Advancing Automation, FANUC America, Universal Robots and Joe Gibbs Racing.

Based in Germany, SCHUNK operates in 50 countries, employing more than 3,400 including engineers, technicians, and staff worldwide. The company opened its first U.S. location in Morrisville in 1992, choosing the area for its quality of life, engineering talent and the long-term economic outlook for the region. The facility focuses on the design and machining of tool holders and related components that attach to robotic arms. The Morrisville location is SCHUNK’s largest U.S. operation and the company’s biggest outside Germany.

The ribbon cutting marked the third expansion for SCHUNK in Morrisville, this time more than doubling its technology, manufacturing and office footprint. As of 2018, SCHUNK had invested more than $100 million in infrastructure and salaries locally. The new facility, combined with investments in personnel over the next five years, represents another $60 million for the region’s economy, and roughly 100 new jobs.

SCHUNK CEO Henrik Schunk and his father, former CEO Heinz-Dieter Schunk, traveled from Stuttgart, Germany for the occasion and made remarks, along with Milton Guerry, president of the Morrisville operation, and North Carolina Secretary of Commerce Anthony M. Copeland.
