Ellsworth Launches Free Adhesives Database for Engineers

By Ellsworth Adhesives Press Release

Engineers trying to keep track of liquid adhesives, coatings, sealants, and specialty chemical materials now have access to the free, searchable Gluespec database from Ellsworth Adhesives (Germantown, WI). The engineering research tool is designed by engineers to help engineers find the right adhesive and specialty materials for their projects as quickly and effectively as possible.

Gluespec contains curated data on more than 7000 materials for industrial applications from more than 70 suppliers. It contains millions of technical specs, test methods, and other critical data points on thousands of specialty chemical materials from around the world.

The database’s grid interface recommends materials based on a user’s customized search for a specific application or specific data points. The grid produces an online spreadsheet that’s prepopulated with technical data. Users can scan all relevant properties and materials and compare them on one screen. Grid data is filterable, sortable, and customizable by every property in the database, including specific gravity, viscosity, impact strength, cure time, and temperature resistance, as well as by manufacturer, material type, industry, substrate, and chemistry.

The Gluespec grid starts out with a large amount of information that engineers can narrow down to two or three materials for testing. The database combines manufacturer data with the industry knowledge of Ellsworth’s engineering service representatives and other technical experts. It also offers the ability to connect with technical reps who focus on specialty materials.

The database’s backbone is SpecEngine, a new type of search engine that combines a spreadsheet format with algorithms, so users can conduct deeper, multifaceted searches for specifying materials. Materials are selected using a proprietary algorithm that delivers results based on the likelihood of success for an application. The algorithm was developed with the help of engineers, chemists, and other technical experts.

Gluespec’s datasheets contain technical data, test methods, best practices, and information on comparable materials. All data is quality-checked during data entry. Ellsworth staff annually checks manufacturer data on all materials and makes updates as needed.

Gluespec Adhesives Database FAQ

What is Gluespec?

A free, proprietary database of quality technical data on liquid adhesives, coatings, and sealants for engineers designing industrial applications. It contains more than 7000 materials from more than 70 manufacturers and is used by thousands of engineers.

Does it cost anything?

No, it’s completely free.

How does it work?

Gluespec combines manufacturer data and the industry knowledge of Ellsworth Adhesives’ engineering service reps and other technical experts. Its grid interface produces an online spreadsheet prepopulated with curated technical data engineers need. The database recommends materials for a project based on the user’s customized search for a specific application or specific data points. Grid data is filterable, sortable, and customizable by every property in the database, including specific gravity, viscosity, impact strength, cure time, and temperature resistance, as well as by manufacturer, material type, industry, substrate, chemistry, and more.

The grid format lets users scan all relevant properties and materials and compare them on one screen. The Gluespec grid starts out with large amounts of information that users can quickly and easily narrow down to two or three materials for testing.

Why did Ellsworth Adhesives create Gluespec?

As a service to the industrial design engineering community, the Gluespec grid was developed by engineers based on feedback from engineers. Engineers wanted a better solution than sorting through messy catalogs, playing phone tag with suppliers, or time-consuming web searches. Ellsworth Adhesives wanted to make the complicated decision-making processes of choosing the right adhesive system easier and less cumbersome for engineers.

Why should I register on the site?

To access the full power of the database. Registering lets you view more than 10 materials per search and gives you access to material test methods, complete technical details, key specifications, and comparable materials. You also get the ability to save your project searches so you can share them with a colleague.

What types of materials are included in the database?

Accelerators/activators, adhesives, anti-static materials, casting/moldmaking materials, coatings, conformal coatings, debonders/removers, doming materials, liquid cleaners, lubricants, masking materials, paints, pottants/encapsulants, primers, repair and maintenance materials, sealants, solders, substrate cleaners, threadlockers, and many more.

What do you mean by “quality” technical data?

Gluespec’s datasheets contain technical data, test methods, best practices, and information on comparable materials. All data is quality-checked during data entry. Also, Ellsworth Adhesives annually checks manufacturer data on all materials and updates Gluespec as needed if new data sheets have been released.

How does Gluespec select materials for a given search?

The backbone of Gluespec is SpecEngine, a new type of search engine that combines a spreadsheet format with algorithms so users can conduct deeper, multifaceted searches for specifying materials. Materials are selected using a proprietary algorithm that delivers results based on the likelihood of success for an application. The algorithm was developed with the help of engineers, chemists, and other technical experts.

What if I need more data?

No problem. If you can’t find the data you need on the site,  can research it and Ellsworth Adhesives find it for you at no cost. More than 150 ESRs, plus Ellsworth’s global network of suppliers and distributors, are available by phone, chat, or email to help you before, during, or after your search.

How is Gluespec different from other materials databases?

Gluespec is a global representation of data from multiple manufacturers not usually found in one place. The data is curated and quality checked by Ellsworth Adhesives, not just selected and posted by manufacturers.

The data also goes deeper than what’s on most materials sites. For instance, Ellsworth Adhesives offers test-method information so engineers can compare the data on the grid or the datasheets with their production or operational environment.  Ellsworth Adhesives does this because data without this context is useless. Ellsworth Adhesives knows this because it is founded by engineers, too. And it offers free access to its ESRs and other experts.
