Carl Zeiss Industrial Metrology (Maple Grove, MN) held a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, Dec. 12, for its new facility in metro Detroit. Located in Lyon Township, the new 82,000 square foot center will consolidate six existing locations in the region under one roof. The facility will include space for research, training, production, a demonstration center and offices—with the ability to do custom metrology work for smaller customers.

“This will have a strong positive impact for our customers and partners in America but will also generate new momentum for the Industrial Quality and Research segment for Zeiss worldwide,” said Dr. Jochen Peter, member of the executive board of the Zeiss Group and head of the Industrial Quality and Research segment.

This will be the first company-owned facility in the region for Zeiss, who previously has leased space for the current six sites in the region. As part of this project, the company will be investing more than $45 million in metro Detroit. Around 170 employees are expected to work from the new facility. In addition to industrial metrology, the site will also be representing the Zeiss Microscopy division in the future.

The new facility was designed by SmithGroup (Detroit), with Christman Group (Detroit) serving as general contractor. It is expected to open in June or July 2020.

Representatives from Carl Zeiss Industrial Metrology, Carl Zeiss Microscopy, Zeiss Germany, Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Oakland County, Lyon Township, DTE Energy, SmithGroup, Christman Company and Newmark Knight Frank were on hand for the groundbreaking.

According to Michael Kirchener, president, Carl Zeiss Industrial Metrology LLC, it was a two-year process from the decision to build a new facility to the groundbreaking.

Zeiss Group (Oberkochen, Germany) was founded in 1846 and is divided up into four segments: Industrial Quality and Research, Medical Technology, Consumer Markets and Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology. In the U.S., the company has more than 3,000 employees with more than 600 in the Industrial Quality and Research division.
