Oakland County (MI) Commissioner Hugh Crawford and Mitutoyo Corp. President Yoshiaki Numata cut the ribbon to officially open the company’s new facility in Novi, MI.

Mitutoyo America Corp. (MAC; Aurora, IL) celebrated the grand opening of its new Detroit-area M3 Solution Center in Novi, MI, on June 28. The 8455 ft2 (785.5 m2) facility replaces one that the company had occupied for 38 years in nearby Plymouth, MI.

According to Michael Creney, vice president of Michigan sales for MAC, Novi is the seventh facility that Mitutoyo has opened in the last six years.

Mitutoyo opened its first site outside of Japan in 1963 in New York City. “At that time we offered 85 products,” said Mark Izumi, marketing group manager for MAC. “Now we offer more than 8500.

The Novi facility is equipped to handle product demonstrations, address application challenges and arrive at specific metrology solutions for customers. It also has a training center where customers can come to learn to operate the myriad metrology solution Mitutoyo offers.

“We have expanded the solutions end of the business recently,” said Matt Dye, MAC president, “because customers need more than out-of-the-box products.” MAC employees 305 staffers in the US and 57 in Canada, he added.

The Novi site is one of nine MAC facilities in the US, said Mitutoyo Corp. President Yoshiaki Numata. He added that the company operates 31 facilities worldwide.

MAC’s Creney said that much of the work done at the Novi site will be for the automotive and medical manufacturing industries. Toward that end Mitutoyo staged the worldwide debut of its Mach 3A CMM for measuring cylindrical objects. It is well suited for measuring crankshafts and camshafts as well as cylindrical orthopedic and prosthetic products.
