SME’s WESTEC Keynote Explores the Impact of Manufacturing on Hollywood



WESTEC, the premier West Coast manufacturing event, recently announced its programming for the 2015 event, which includes a keynote on the power of manufacturing in Hollywood. Jason Lopes of Legacy Effects will discuss how manufacturing — specifically additive manufacturing/3D printing — is changing the face of special effects in the film industry. Lopes is a lead systems engineer at Legacy Effects, and will talk about “3D Printing for Hollywood” and how it is impacting some of the industry’s biggest effects for movies like Avengers Age of Ultron, Jurassic World, Terminator Genesys, Iron Man 3, Hunger Games, Pacific Rim, Twilight: Breaking Dawn, and others. Inside the Silicon Valley of Manufacturing Technology: Premium Turning Machines

In the southwest part of Germany surrounding Stuttgart, known as the Silicon Valley for manufacturing technologies, a slice of the country’s leadership in this area was on full display during the INDEX & TRAUB open house in mid-June. The INDEX Group, which is headquartered in Esslingen and has 2,300 employees worldwide, is one of the largest turning machine manufacturers in the world, founded in 1914. A Positive Outcome for the Italian Machine Tool Industry

In 2014 the Italian machine tool, robot and automation industry recorded a positive outcome, showing a production growth driven by the recovery of domestic consumption. The resumption of Italian domestic demand benefitted mostly the deliveries of Italian manufacturers, registering a strong increase. Thanks to its positive performance, the Italian industry strengthened its fourth position in the world ranking of manufacturers and confirmed its third place in the ranking of exporters.

The 2015 edition of SME’s RAPID Conference & Exposition (Long Beach, CA), while displaying 3D printing of the present, also presented anticipation for the future of additive manufacturing. “I’ve never been more optimistic about it,” industry consultant Terry Wohlers said during a speech on May 21, the last day of the show. RAPID 2015 attracted more than 4,500 attendees, up 30% from 2014. “It’s finally getting the attention and respect and investment it deserves,” Wohlers said. Full Article
