Professional Membership
SME's professional members ranging from manufacturing engineers, practitioners, educators and researchers are involved in all aspects and levels of manufacturing. Your expertise sets you apart from others in manufacturing.
REQUIREMENTS
This membership level is available to:
- An individual who has an SME Certification.
- A registered professional engineer.
- A graduate with an associate or bachelor’s degree in science or engineering from an accredited school.
- A person with a minimum of four years of experience in activities contributing to the realization of manufactured products or to the support of such enterprises in industry, government or education.
- A professional in a manufacturing enterprise or one serving manufacturing.
COST
- One-Year Membership: $138
- Two-Year Membership: $248.50
- Three-Year Membership: $352

Emerging Professionals
SME’s emerging professionals are poised to begin or continue their professional careers. Take control of your career and stand out among the competition as an SME Emerging Professional.
REQUIREMENTS
This membership level is available to:
- High School and college graduates, aged 18-35.
- Individuals who have graduated from high school and/or college within the last five years.
- Individuals not currently enrolled in school.
COST
- One-Year Membership: $45*
- Five-Year Membership: $200 (save $25)
*The $45/year rate is available for up to five years after graduation.
Postsecondary Individual
At this point in your life, it’s time to focus your ambition, be goal-oriented and, most importantly, prepare for what’s ahead after you graduate. Get a head start now as an SME Postsecondary Member and make inroads in manufacturing.
REQUIREMENTS
To qualify for a postsecondary student membership, an undergraduate or graduate student must:
- Be working toward the completion of an academic credential in good standing at a technical institution, college or university pursuing degrees in manufacturing or a related field.
- Be registered with full or part-time status based on the institution’s regulations (a minimum of six credits per semester are required to qualify for part-time status).
- Be enrolled in either a traditional or nontraditional educational program.
- Participating in a co-op work terms, practicum and/or thesis research terms (optional).

Institutional Membership
SME's Institutional Group Membership is available to colleges, universities and technical institutes focused on engineering and manufacturing that are interested in providing their faculty and staff with access to SME’s rich resources and knowledge of manufacturing.
ABET Program Evaluation
SME is one of only 35 organizations that provides ABET with input on the more than 3,600 scientific and technical programs at 700+ institutions in 29 countries. SME members serve as program evaluators for manufacturing technology and manufacturing engineering programs.
Dues
The yearly $750 fee provides five professional memberships for faculty, administrators and staff.
- Employees at the same institution can join or renew at a special rate of $20 per year.
- The membership covers all campuses of the same institution.
- Individual student memberships are not covered nor this program related to the establishment of an on-campus student chapter. Students can join separately as postsecondary members.

High School Educator Membership
