In celebrating our 90 years of supporting technology advancement and the development of the workforce, we look into the future of manufacturing with excitement and optimism. We have made a tremendous impact collaborating with industry and academia to help solve some of the greatest challenges makers have faced over the past century. We salute the innovators who advance technologies - making the unimaginable real, saving lives, creating diverse and thriving communities, and inspiring generations of makers that solve the world’s most pressing problems. We applaud educators who develop manufacturing, engineering, and research talent that enables innovation. We celebrate all makers who work tirelessly to take grand ideas and make them available to the world. The impact of their efforts has contributed to the betterment of society and all that we see, know, and do.

After 90 years, we still stand by SME’s core belief that manufacturing is the key to economic growth and prosperity. We thank you for joining our mission to advance manufacturing technologies and develop a skilled workforce. We are proud of the impact SME has had in helping manufacturers thrive and excited to imagine the unlimited possibilities the next generation has before them. SME is honored to celebrate our 90 years and looks forward to our future supporting diversity, innovation, and talent in manufacturing.

SME believes in makers. Makers believe in the impossible. Together we change the world.

SME convenes makers to advance manufacturing and attract future generations. Together, we promote manufacturing technology, develop a skilled workforce, and work to build prosperous communities where people thrive.

Continually Evolving to Support Manufacturing

It was 1932. The American Society of Tool Engineers was founded. We became the Society of Manufacturing Engineers in 1969 to support this emerging profession. In 2013 we became SME to reflect our evolution supporting manufacturing technology and talent that could only be dreamt about in 1932. Over our 90 years, SME may have changed how we serve the needs of manufacturing. Throughout our history, SME’s mission has remained constant: to promote manufacturing technology, develop a skilled workforce, and inspire the manufacturing community and next generation of makers.

“As a scientist I research lots of different manufacturing processes, but I don’t always have connections to industry that I’d like to have, and that’s where SME comes in. Any kind of industry and person you can think of there are involved in the SME community.”
