Meet the 88th President of SME

Susan Smyth, PhD, FSME, NAE, has been elected as the new SME President for 2020. Smyth’s accomplishments and leadership role with SME were recognized at the annual SME Installation and Awards Gala in Chicago.

smyth-susan_600x845_111419.jpgSME is proud to announce that we have elevated 2019 president-elect Susan Smyth, PhD, FSME, NAE, to be its 2020 president. Smyth’s accomplishments and leadership role with SME were recognized at the annual SME Installation and Awards Gala in Chicago on November 9th. The SME President and Board of Directors is elected by the entire voting membership of SME. It is made up of industry and academic leaders whose diverse backgrounds represent years of experience from a wide array of manufacturing disciplines.

Susan has played an integral part in the advancement of manufacturing for much of her career. She’s held various leadership roles with companies and institutions across industries including, quality, strategic business planning, and Research & Development. Elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2018, Smyth was made an SME Fellow in 2015. She currently serves on the advisory boards for the National Science Foundation and U.S. Army. Previously, Smyth was the chief scientist for global manufacturing at General Motors and the director of GM R&D Manufacturing Systems Research Labs, directing the creation of GM’s global manufacturing R&D strategies. Smyth has served as chair of the U.S. Manufacturing Council as well as serving as an executive technology advisor to the University of Michigan, MIT, Georgia Tech, Northwestern University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

SME Installs Officers, International Directors and Council Representatives

Along with the announcement of Smyth as the next president of SME, the organization installed its new officers, directors and council representatives during the annual SME Installation and Awards Gala. The new volunteer leaders take office in January 2020.

As the governing body of the organization, the SME Board of Directors establishes business policies and strategic direction, while the SME Member Council formulates recommendations to the board related to SME membership’s overall recruitment, retention and engagement.
