Narendra B. Dahotre is being recognized with the Eli Whitney Productivity Award for his pioneering contributions to research and education in fundamental understanding of science and engineering of laser materials interactions along with implementation of high-power lasers in materials processing and manufacturing with major emphasis on surface engineering at national and international levels.

Dahotre is internationally recognized for contributions to fundamentals of laser-materials interactions and implementation of lasers in materials processing/advanced manufacturing. His work is compiled in four books as author; 13 books as editor, 16 issued and three pending U.S. patents, and 271 publications. Dahotre is the founding editor-in-chief of the “International J. Additive & Subtractive Materials Manufacturing” and serves on eight journal editorial boards. He has guided/advised/mentored 17 MS and 18 doctorate students and 11 postdoctoral fellows. Dahotre is a fellow of WIF (2014), NAI (2013), MRSI (2011), SME (2010), AAAS (2009), IIM (2009), ASME (2008), ASM (2004) and recipient of 2013-TMS–MPMD Distinguished Engineer/Scientist; 2006-R&D-100; 2006-Chancellor’s Research & Creativity Achievement; and 2006-College of Engineering Research Fellow Awards at University of Tennessee and 2017 Innovator Award and 2016 Faculty Leadership Award at the University of North Texas. Wayne Frost is being honored with the Joseph A. Siegel Service Award for his service to SME for 33 years, over three decades, as a leader, worker, director, officer, president and even for a brief time as CEO of SME. His efforts began in the local chapter, carried on into region leadership, and then into director and officer levels and involved senior chapters, student chapters and today working with whatever requests come to serve.

Frost retired from the John Deere Waterloo Works and served as the president of SME in 2015. In 2014, from July to December, he served as the interim CEO for SME. While at Deere, Frost managed the lean manufacturing program. He also served other John Deere Units in North and South America as a Deere product quality system auditor. With over 40 years at John Deere, Frost worked in positions of manufacturing management, quality assurance and supply management. As an active SME member, he has served at the international, region and chapter levels. Frost served on the SME Board of Directors from 2004-07 and again from 2009-16. He earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa. Frost is currently a director for the local United Way, a hospice volunteer and active in several other nonprofit organizations in his local community. SME Member Since 1983

Jason S. Miller

Jason S. Miller is recognized with the Donald C. Burnham Manufacturing Management Award for his leadership of federal manufacturing and innovation policies addressing human, technical and financial issues, and executive sponsorship making possible Manufacturing USA – the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation.

Miller is the CEO of the Greater Washington Partnership, where he works side by side with the region's top business, academic and civic leaders to affect meaningful change on the most critical issues facing the Capital Region of Baltimore, Washington, and Richmond.  previously served at the White House as deputy assistant to President Obama and deputy director of the National Economic Council. Miller joined the administration in 2010 to build and lead the White House Manufacturing Office. Over his subsequent seven years, he developed and implemented some of the administration’s most important efforts to spur a more competitive, innovative economy, including launching the Manufacturing USA program, spearheading infrastructure investment initiatives, leading the White House’s efforts to provide Puerto Rico tools needed to address its economic and fiscal crisis, and developing and growing SelectUSA, the first-ever federal effort to bring job-creating investment to the U.S. from around the world. Miller was previously a management consultant for The Boston Consulting Group and Marakon Associates, where he advised leading companies on strategic and operational issues. Miller holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, politics and economics from the University of Pennsylvania, a master’s degree in business administration from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. SME Member Since 2017

Albert Shih, PhD, FSME

Albert Shih is being honored with the SME Frederick W. Taylor Research Medal for his pioneer work in machining and biomedical manufacturing. He has established and demonstrated close and impactful research collaborations with healthcare and inspired and set an example for the manufacturing community to advance the safety, quality and efficiency of healthcare services.

Shih is a professor at the University of Michigan. He was a manufacturing engineer at Cummins and a professor at North Carolina State University. Shih’s research area is manufacturing. He is a pioneer in biomedical manufacturing, the application of manufacturing technologies to advance the safety, quality, efficiency and speed of healthcare service and biomedical science. Shih has 10 U.S. patents, a textbook in machining and machine tools, and authored or co-authored over 190 archival journal papers. Shih is the recipient of Fulbright Scholar, ASME Milton Shaw Manufacturing Research Medal and Blackall Machine Tool and Gage Award, Society of Automotive Engineers Ralph Teetor Educational Award, and Best Paper awards in ASME International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference (MSEC), North American Manufacturing Research Conference (NAMRC), International Conference on Frontiers of Design and Manufacturing (ICFDM). Jacob "Jack" Jeswiet, PhD, FSME, PE

Jacob Jeswiet is receiving the SME Albert M. Sargent Progress Award for significant contributions in sheet-metal part fabrication via his work in dieless forming and rolling. Jeswiet has further extended his contributions in manufacturing by leading the manufacturing engineering community in laying the foundations for lifecycle engineering.

Jeswiet is a professor of Mechanical Engineering at Queen's University, a professional engineer in the Province of Ontario, Canada, and a fellow of SME, Engineers Canada, the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering, the Engineering Institute of Canada and the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP). His current manufacturing research interests in metal forming include single-point incremental sheet forming and the measurement of friction and temperature in metal forming. In manufacturing and the environment, his interests are in life-cycle engineering (recycling of lithium ion batteries) and ecodesign (the “Effects of Technological Development and Electricity Price Reductions on the Adoption of Residential Heat Pumps”). Jeswiet is involved in many societies. He is on the board of directors of CSME and is a former chair, vice chair and secretary of CIRP (Collège International pour la Recherche en Productique) Scientific Committee on Forming and is the former vice-chair and secretary of the CIRP Scientific Committee on Life Cycle/Assembly. Jeswiet is one of three founding members (in 1993) of the successful CIRP Life Cycle Engineering Conference. Based on his work in LCE, he has developed a special online course on sustainable product design. Jeswiet has served on the Natural Science Engineering Research Council (Canada) Discovery Grant Committee and the National Science Foundation (USA). He is a warden of Camp 3 of the Obligation of the Engineer (Iron Ring). Jeswiet also serves on the Life Cycle Analysis Technical Committee 207 of the ISO. He has had industrial experience at DuPont, Celanese and Alcan Research. Jeswiet's academic experience includes Queen’s University and the University of New Brunswick. Kornel F. Ehmann, PhD, FSME

Kornel F. Ehmann is the recipient of the SME Education Award for his pioneering research and leadership in innovative manufacturing processes with seminal contributions to machine tool error modeling, real-time compensation and micromachining.  

Ehmann received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in 1970 and 1974 from the University of Belgrade, and his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1979, all in mechanical engineering. He has served as a professor from 1990 — current and as an associate professor from 1985-90 at Northwestern and as an assistant professor from 1981-85 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Ehmann is currently the editor-in-chief of SME’s “Manufacturing Letters” journal. He is a past president of the North American Manufacturing Research Institution of SME (NAMRI/SME). In 2004, he was named the James N. and Nancy J. Farley Professor in Manufacturing and Entrepreneurship at Northwestern. Ehmann received the SME Gold Medal, MED/ASME Outstanding Service Award, NAMRI/SME Outstanding Lifetime Service Award, ASME: Blackall Machine Tool and Gage Award and the ASME: Milton C. John W. Sutherland, PhD, FSME

John W. Sutherland is recognized with the SME Gold Medal for his significant contributions to the manufacturing engineering profession through his research, published literature, lectures and technical communications — and notably his pioneering efforts to establish the field of sustainable manufacturing. 

Since joining Purdue as inaugural EEE head in 2009, Sutherland has led the launch of bachelor's, master’s and doctorate degrees, and nurtured EEE’s growth into one of the nation’s largest environmental engineering departments. He previously held the Henes Professorship in Mechanical Engineering and was the director of the Sustainable Futures Institute at Michigan Tech. Sutherland earned his degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His teaching and research interests are in sustainable manufacturing. His recognitions include the SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award, Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, SAE Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award, SME Education Award, SAE International John Connor Environmental Award and ASME William T. Ennor Manufacturing Technology Award.
