SME Announces 2017 Award of Merit Honoree

(DEARBORN, Mich., April 6, 2017) ― SME has announced that John Agapiou, PhD, FSME, is the recipient of the 2017 SME Award of Merit. Agapiou is technical fellow engineer for General Motors Global Research and Development in Warren, Michigan. A member of SME since 1981, he is being recognized for his more than 30 years of support and valued contributions to SME's professional activities and growth.

Agapiou has held a wide variety of leadership positions, including chapter chair and member of SME’s International Awards & Recognition Committee. He served as the 2012-13 North American Manufacturing Research Institution of SME (NAMRI/SME) president. Agapiou received the SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award in 1992 and the S.M. Wu Research Implementation Award in 2015. He was nominated for the Award of Merit this year by SME’s Oakland-Macomb Chapter for continuing to promote the importance of manufacturing as well as the many values, resources and growth that SME has to offer its membership.

“John’s expansive career experiences and volunteer leadership roles clearly affirm his qualification,” said Sandra Bouckley, FSME, P.Eng., 2017 SME president. “SME and our members have been the beneficiaries of John’s generous sharing of knowledge and ability. We’re grateful and pleased to recognize him with our Award of Merit.”

Agapiou’s career spans 32 years and includes leadership in machining, quality assurance, and technology development and implementation roles. In addition to his practical engineering and fundamental research efforts, he’s advanced the education and training of the next generation of manufacturing engineers through teaching part time at Wayne State University in Detroit for 20 years. Agapiou holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Louisville and a doctorate in manufacturing from the University of Wisconsin.
