The Aston Martin DB5, a familiar sight since 1964’s Goldfinger, will be back in a new James Bond film due out in 2020.
However, the car has gotten a facelift with newer materials.
On Thursday, Prince Charles visited Pinewood Studios to view preparations for the next James Bond film. That movie, as yet untitled (it’s referred to as Bond 25), will have three Aston Martin models, including the new Valhalla supercar and the DB5.
The DB5 was in the last 007 film, 2015’s SPECTRE. At the end, Bond (Daniel Craig) drove off in the DB5, accompanied by Madeline Swann (Lea Seydoux), the lead female character. It appeared that Bond was done with spying.
Never say never again, as the saying goes. Bond 25 is due out in April 2020. Bond has been off-duty but gets dragged back into the world of espionage.
Daniel Craig showed off a DB5 on display at Pinewood. A News 5 video posted to YouTube included Craig explaining to Prince Charles how the DB5 isn’t the same as the 1960s original.
“Underneath here…is a BMW engine on a modern chassis, modern suspension,” Craig told the prince of Wales. “We’ve had five of these made.” Referring to the car’s body, he said, This is carbon fiber.”
Carbon fiber has long been used to build race cars. It’s also a material that figures into auto industry efforts to reduce weight and improve fuel efficiency.
This isn’t the first time Aston Martin has made replicas of the original DB5.
In 2018, Aston Martin announced it planned to make replica DB5 cars, complete with Bond-like gadgets, for delivery beginning in 2020. They are priced at 2.75 million British pounds ($3.5 million) each. And they won’t be street legal. In short, they’ll amount to an expensive hobby to buy, own and drive.
