Description:
Finishing is a very important part of manufacturing. It is performed regularly and, like other processes, has evolved to include new technology. This chapter progresses from very fundamental to more sophisticated methods. It covers deburring, honing, lapping, shot peening, electropolishing, anodizing, and polymer coatings. In powder-based coating, a finely pulverized polymer is applied to the work surface at ambient conditions and then cured at an elevated temperature. This technology uses similar binders and pigments as in the liquid process, but utilizes a much different carrier to distribute and cure the coating material.
