Description:

Every shop seems to have a slightly different way of looking for burrs, differing expectations of what burrs are, and degrees of acceptability. Each inspection technique yields different results. While no single way is best, there are ways to be fast, exceptionally accurate, quantitative, and provide a pass-fail conclusion. This chapter provides an in-depth look at the many aspects of burr inspection. There are six elements of burr inspection or measuring systems, including: standard for defining pass or fail; measurement or detection method; consistency in employing the method and standard; training of inspection workers; equipment calibration; knowing the statistic of most significance, and documentation of results. These elements are discussed throughout this chapter. There are more than 40 techniques for measuring or detecting burrs. They can be categorized as: tactile, visual, destructive, replica, dimensional, mechanical or hard-gaged, structured lighting, functionally tested, capacitive, inductive, acoustic, and/or force feedback. The final point in burr measurement is that burrs are often so irregular that a single measurement per part results in tremendous swings in measured results. A record of all devices in calibration should be available for all quality systems.
