Despite the presence of many sophisticated machining and finishing processes, filing remains one of the necessary hand operations for many parts. This chapter describes some available files, the differences among them, and techniques for using them. There are at least 2,300 different types of files.Despite efforts to standardize them among manufacturers and countries, considerable differences exist; therefore, it is difficult to categorize and describe all the commercially available variations. Basically, however, there are five general types of files: Swiss precision files, Swiss precision rifflers, American pattern files, millenicut files, and diamond-plated files. Basic differences among these files include: variations in shape, variations in size, and/or variations in tooth configuration. Two more distinctions must be considered. A file may be either single cut or double cut.
