Manual deburring adds value to products. As this chapter shows, however, many things are right about hand deburring. Many of today’s hand deburring problems are rooted in a lack of understanding. There are at least 14 reasons for using hand deburring, rather than automated approaches. The challenge to manufacturing engineers is to efficiently produce the desired edge definition at every edge; therefore, they must select a method that can remove burrs quickly and at a reasonable cost, without adversely affecting part definition and function. Effective deburring requires knowledge of four factors: burr properties — thickness, height, and hardness relative to part hardness; allowable changes in part dimension resulting from the deburring operation; edge radius requirement, and final surface finish requirement, as well as knowledge of the part’s initial surface finish.
