Deburring means the removal of burrs at the edges of parts. There are 109 deburring and edge-finishing processes. Of these, hand deburring, also known as hand or bench work, benching, or manual deburring, is the most widely used process. It describes any deburring activity that requires a handheld deburring tool. This book focuses on hand deburring and how to make it more effective. Burr technology relies on five principles. The first principle is that cost-effective deburring requires knowledge of burr properties (for each edge), part design, part function, and deburring process capabilities. The second principle states that there are five basic and edge quality are separate views of deburring. The fourth principle states that there is a vast number of deburring innovations, deburring processes, and deburring process variations. The fifth principle notes that even the subtlest tricks of the trade can generate substantial savings. They can eliminate, for example, the need for new machines, as well as high-tech training and maintenance. Innovation is the key to success. The key to selecting the most effective process is to consider a number of factors, including burr size and accessibility, edge requirements, available equipment, and cost. There are 12 goals for hand deburring.
