Over the last decade, rapid prototyping (RP) anatomical models based on medical image data have found wide acceptance in the fields of cranio-maxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery and orthopedics. Models are typically used for surgical planning, improved communication between medical experts and patients and to facilitate custom implant manufacture. Advances in RP technology that allow selective coloration of surfaces or volumes enable the manufacture of more realistic and descriptive anatomical replicas. This increase in capabilities has broadened the applicability of RP models in biomedical applications. Examples include transparent models in which a complex vascular structure is depicted in color to facilitate surgical planning, realistic brain models built from combinations of multi-modal imaging data used to validate surgical navigation systems, and colorized models of bony anatomy where individual fracture fragments are selectively colored to clearly describe the extent of traumatic injury.
