Description:

The motivation behind research into incremental double diaphragm forming of composite materials and recent developments are discussed in this paper. Double diaphragm forming is a relatively new method of forming lay-ups of unidirectional or woven fiber layers preimpregnated by a matrix material (a.k.a. prepreg) into desired shapes. Incremental forming involves actively changing the shape of the mold during the double diaphragm forming process using a reconfigurable forming tool. Pertinent prior work done involving active forming of composite materials leading up to the present work is briefly described. Authors: Christopher B. Munro, Daniel Walczyk, George Dvorak, Steven J. Slusarski, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY.
