Ergonomic principles in hand tool design, such as weight of the tool, and grip sizes and shapes, combined with safety issues like effective guards and acceptable guidelines for the utilization of the tool, play an immensely important role in the creation of appropriate concepts. Correct implementation of these principles can reduce the forces required to operate these tools, enhancing safety, reducing injuries and making power tools more accessible to people of less than average ability. Presently the "average" able-bodied user is the main target of hand tool products. Authors: J. O'Shea, W. F. Gaughran, University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland.
