The objective of this research was to study the effects of prototyping process parameters on the surface roughness of prototyped samples from fused deposition modeling. The research investigated the effects of the build parameters: model temperature, layer thickness, road width, raster orientation and air gap. Statistically designed experiments were used to determine the processing factors that affected the surface roughness of rapidly prototyped ABS polymer. A two-level, five-factor fractional factorial experiment was used to select the best combination of factor levels that minimized the surface roughness. The significant factors, their interactions and the optimum settings are proposed.
