Description:

In this work, cutting temperatures when machining welded hard facings with PCBN tools were studied using a thermocouple technique. A finite element (FE) model was used to predict the chip-tool interface temperature and its distribution in the machining system. The average cutting temperature ranged from 600-700 deg. C and increased with higher cutting speed and feed rate. The hard facing microstructure exhibited significant effect on the cutting temperatures. A hard facing with larger carbide grains showed lower cutting temperatures and exhibited a lower increase rate with cutting speed and feed rate. Authors: X. J.
