Up until now, the only effective way of getting real-time correctness was to build a static schedule of what to run and when. Although the direct implementation of the schedule is highly efficient, there is a problem: the application structure and timing demands must be altered to fit the constraints of the schedule, leading to the overall inefficiency. There is an alternative now, though: use a super efficient real-time kernel. The application can then be run in line with its true timing requirements, giving efficiency gains large enough to easily outweigh the small overheads of the real-time kernel.
