Optimism Among US Industrial Manufacturers Rises to Highest in Eight Years



Optimism regarding the direction of the domestic economy rose among U.S. industrial manufacturers during the first quarter of 2014, according to the Q1 2014 Manufacturing Barometer, released today by PwC US.  The positive sentiment about the prospects of U.S. commerce in the next 12 months reached the highest level since the fourth quarter of 2005.  Conversely, optimism regarding the prospects of the world economy lessened during the first quarter as U.S. industrial manufacturers remained cautious on the global stage.

February U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $354.40 million according to AMT - The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTO program, was down 6.6% from January and down 6.2% when compared with the total of $377.82 million reported for February 2013. President Barack Obama announced on Feb. 25 that the next two manufacturing hubs in the growing National Network for Manufacturing Innovation will go to Chicago and Metro Detroit. That brings the total of announced manufacturing hubs to four, and the President also launched a competition for a fifth new innovation institute to build strength in manufacturing advanced composites.
