SME Membership Dues Increase

At its February 2012 meeting, the SME Board of Directors approved an increase in membership dues from $125 to $138. The increase is scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2012.

SME values its members and all of their contributions to the Society, and we continually strive to increase the value for our members through our products and services. Over the past two years the Society has added more value for its members, including (among other things):

  • @SME — the digital members-only supplement to Manufacturing Engineering magazine.
  • New tools to enhance member connectivity and access to manufacturing knowledge and information.
  • Exclusive members-only activities at SME's events.

The SME Board of Directors carefully considered a lot of information in its decision-making process:

  • SME’s dues have remained constant since 2006. SME has worked hard to maintain its dues, even through the Great Recession.
  • Based solely on inflation from 2006, $125 is equivalent to $143 today (CPI inflation calculator from the Bureau of Labor Statistics).
  • The median level of dues among organizations like SME is $144/year, and the peak dues level among organizations like SME is $205. Thus, SME remains highly competitive at a dues rate of $138. Below is a breakdown of the membership dues rate structure:
