IMTS 2014: Manufacturing’s New Virtuous Cycle

The bellboy at my hotel said it all. He told me there wasn’t a hotel room to be found in the city of Chicago, and many suburban hotels were sold out, too. He seemed a bit surprised: All of this for a manufacturing show?! Yes, with attendance at IMTS over 109,000 as of press time, and two days left to go, it’s clear that we’ve entered a new era of cutting-edge manufacturing technology that is ready to change the global economy in new ways. IMTS 2014: Additive and Collaborative

From additive manufacturing to collaborative robots, software advances and STEM student programs, IMTS 2014 had something for just about everyone. This year’s show boasted registered attendance of more than 112,000, easily eclipsing the 100,200 attendees at IMTS 2012. One of the star attractions at this year’s show was the Local Motors’ (Chandler, AZ) effort to build a 3D-printed electric car, which as of this writing was scheduled to be completed by late Friday. The Local Motors crew putting together the Strati, the winning design of the 3D Printed Car Challenge, was targeting an early Saturday morning drive-off of the completed car. Full Article

IMTS 2014: Trade Official: Globalization Requires a Free-Trade Alliance to Combat Protectionism

An Italian official says globalization is beginning to benefit developed economies, but the shift needs the help of free-trade agreements.“The pace of the negotiations is not the right one,” Carlo Calenda, Italy’s vice minister for economic development, said in an interview in Chicago. “We are facing in Europe and the US a lot of protectionist feeling.” Full Article

IMTS 2014: Chinese Machine Tool Maker Considering US Factory

Chinese machine tool maker SMTCL is considering whether to build a U.S. factory, which would supply customers in North America, the company said Monday at the International Manufacturing Technology Show. Full Article

Manufacturing Industry Breaks Guinness World Record During IMTS 2014

IMTS 2014: The Beginning of the End and Then a New Start

"The shop floor is my favorite office," said Kennametal chairman, president and CEO Carlos Cardoso as he prepares to transition to retirement following the close of IMTS 2014. While he  may be giving up his executive suite when he departs Kennametal at the end of December, it is unlikely he will be able to tear himself away from his favorite and first "office."
