Special Issue on Industry 4.0 and Smart Manufacturing

Manufacturing LettersIn its origins, the term Industry 4.0 was associated with the computerization of manufacturing and the definition of the skills that the new workforce needed to develop to take advantage of the high-paying jobs. Today, a number of trends such as the internet of things (IoT), digital manufacturing and cyber-physical systems are considered key elements of the definition and implementation of Industry 4.0. Technological advancements in the ability to collect, transfer and analyze vast amounts of data very rapidly are at the core of this trend. Closely related, smart manufacturing is a concept that aims at developing smart factories that integrate these new technologies to rapidly adapt and respond to changes in the markets’ demands for high-quality products. In practice, smart factories lie at the core of both, Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing.

This special issue of SME's journal, Manufacturing Letters, aims to provide a platform for researchers to showcase findings and explore emerging technologies in the design and implementation of smart factories. Original research contributions and/or reviews are invited for this special issue.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Innovative sensing strategies for process monitoring and tracking of product history.
  • Machine learning techniques to improve process control and part quality.
  • Smart tooling and in-line part inspection.
  • Integration of additive manufacturing in smart factories.
  • Smart modeling of factory floors and manufacturing processes integrated with sensor data.
  • Manufacturing data analysis and diagnostics for real-time reporting using intranet capabilities and/or the cloud.
  • Case studies in the design and deployment of networked-distributed digital manufacturing paradigms.
  • New human machine interface and communication technologies.
  • Cyberphysical systems for the design and operation of smart manufacturing facilities.
  • Use of cloud, distributed and digital manufacturing paradigms in cyberphysical systems.

Publication Target Dates

  • Submission of papers by: Sept. 15, 2017
  • Initial review completed by: Oct. 15, 2017
  • Final Papers due by: Nov. 15, 2017
  • Publication of special issue by: Dec. 2017

Early submissions are strongly encouraged. Papers submitted by the deadline will be reviewed in time for inclusion in the special issue. Papers received after that date may still be considered for the special issue, space and time permitting. In certain circumstances, papers that are not ready for production in time for inclusion in the special issue may be considered for a regular issue of the journal.

Submission Guidelines
Papers should be submitted electronically to the journal.

Original, concise papers are encouraged describing new kinds of manufacturing based on new processes, new concepts in manufacturing systems or enterprises, or novel ways to look at old problems and solutions in manufacturing that show promise.

Papers are limited to 1,500 words, not including the abstract, references and a maximum of four (4) figures or tables. Papers must be original contributions, not simultaneously submitted elsewhere, previously published or scheduled to be published.
