SME Education Foundation Family Scholarship

History

The SME Education Foundation seeks to support the children or grandchildren of SME members, and to encourage their pursuit of careers in manufacturing engineering and technology. This highly competitive scholarship, made possible by the E. Wayne Kay Scholarship Fund, will be awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence and an interest in manufacturing engineering or related technology.

Criteria

  1. Applicants must have at least one parent or grandparent who has been an SME member in good standing for the last two years -- includes step-mothers and step-fathers.


  2. Applicants may be either graduating high school seniors or undergraduate students with up to 30 credit hours completed.


  3. Applicants must pursue a degree in manufacturing engineering, manufacturing engineering technology, or a closely related engineering field of study at an accredited college or university the United States or Canada.


  4. Applicants must enroll full-time at the college or university of his or her choice.


  5. Applicants must have a high school GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.


  6. Applicants must have a minimum SAT score of 1000 and/or ACT score of 21.


  7. Applicants must reside within the United States or Canada.


  8. The scholarship can be used only as a credit towards tuition, books, lab or course fees, on-campus living expenses, and other educational expenses approved by the SME-EF Administration.

Selection Criteria:

  • Overall academic excellence
  • Communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills (e.g. leadership, teamwork, group, etc.)
  • Demonstrated interest and aptitude for potential future success in a manufacturing engineering, manufacturing engineering technology, or closely related field.
  • Extracurricular activities

Renewal Requirements:

  • The winner must continue to comply with all eligibility requirements and maintain a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • The winner must submit the Intent to Renew Form and copies of the previous year's transcripts to the Foundation prior to the start of the next academic year.

Documents (5) that you will need to upload to complete the application process are:

  1. Student Statement Letter

  2. Prepare a maximum 300-word statement explaining:
    • Student's career objectives in manufacturing engineering, manufacturing engineering technology or a closely related field
    • Student's educational objectives
    • How this scholarship would help the student obtain those objectives
    • Why the student wants to enter this field.
  3. Student resume (limited to two single-sided pages):
    • Any extracurricular activities in which the student is, or has been, involved, especially those related to manufacturing engineering or a closely related field
    • Any academic courses or projects related to the student's intended area of study in college
    • Evidence of the student's ability to work on a team
    • Evidence of the student's leadership abilities
    • Name of the college or university the student currently attends or plans to attend
    • Student's intended course of study
    • Student's work experience
    • Academic honors or awards student has received
    • High school applicants and undergraduate freshman must include SAT or ACT scores.
  4. An official copy of the student's high school transcript.
    • Undergraduate students (with less than 30 credits) need to include all college transcripts.
  5. Two Recommendation Letters

    All Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation. At least one of the letters must be from the student's current school faculty. Letters of recommendation must be signed and less than 6 months old. Form letters of recommendation or letters from relatives, friends or peers will not be considered. Unsigned letters will not be considered.
