Bret Weber found his manufacturing career path early on while still a high school student. Bret began working at Geater Machining & Manufacturing Co. (GMM) when he was 16 years old doing miscellaneous utility work in the paint and hardware departments. After high school, he completed his Associate of Applied Science degree in machining with honors in the EMC2 program at Hawkeye Community College (Waterloo, IA). EMC2 is a consortium between Hawkeye, area high schools and area manufacturers, which enables high school students to earn a year of their CNC degree while still in high school.
Joining GMM with his machinist degree in hand, Bret began to progress through various responsibilities, including team leader, supervisor, lead CNC programmer, and machinist. Along the way he became adept at programming and helped bring Mastercam into the company. He worked in prototyping, scheduling and promoted lean principles. His programming experience resulted in optimized cycle times, improved programming software, and recommendations to change processing of machined parts. He established a method for programming the FMS Rail system, writing many of the macros in the background for running lasers and probes in the machine.
During this time, Bret also joined the National Guard. He currently holds the position of Machining Team Lead, is married and has two children.
Geater’s management team nominated Bret for ME Media’s 30 Under 30 Award with these words: “Bret not only continues to make extraordinary contributions in his daily role but he also willingly shares his talent and expertise with others. Bret is giving back by training young students interested in a career in manufacturing who are participating in the EMC2 program by guiding more students interested in a career in manufacturing as they learn from the best GMM has to offer. Bret is one of the more skilled and hardworking employees at GMM and can run most machines including the state-of-the-art FMS Rail system. Bret is a true role model to those in the manufacturing industry. His intelligence, ambition, dedication and leadership are all qualities that he has leveraged while at GMM. These characteristics will without a doubt continue to help him to grow in his career here at GMM. Bret exemplifies the quality of an outstanding, dedicated leader who possesses personal integrity which is one of the many reasons we are nominating him for the 30 Under 30 recognition.”
