DEARBORN, Mich., October 18, 2012 – The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) announces that John Vickers, assistant manager of the Materials and Processes Laboratory at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, has joined the Executive Committee of AeroDef Manufacturing 2013. AeroDef is an exposition and technical conference to be held March 19-21, 2013 at the Long Beach (Calif.) Convention Center.
“SME and the AeroDef Executive Committee are working to create an event that will identify transformational technologies for next generation programs,” said Debbie Holton, SME director of events and industry strategy. “John’s experience in advanced materials is a real benefit as we explore ways to increase innovation, produceability and affordability.”
Mr. Vickers is responsible for materials and manufacturing engineering, research and development, strategic planning and partnerships with government, industry and academia. He has more than 30 years of experience in materials, manufacturing, and operations of propulsion, spacecraft and scientific systems.
He also serves as the manager of the NASA National Center for Advanced Manufacturing. In this position, he provides leadership and subject-matter expertise for the space flight center and the agency. He is the NASA representative to the National Science and Technology Council, Interagency Working Group on Advanced Manufacturing. He also works closely with the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, and with Louisiana State Universities, state, and local stakeholders to advance manufacturing research and development and increase ties between NASA and community.
He currently holds several key assignments supporting the NASA Space Technology Program and Game Changing Development Program. He serves as the project manager for the Composite Cryotank project and is the co-chair for the NASA Space Technology Roadmap for the “Materials, Structures, Mechanisms and Manufacturing” technology area. He also serves as a mentor for the NASA Space Technology Research Fellowship Program.
