MESA, Ariz., June 11, 2012 — Jon DeVault, who is often referred to as “Mr. Carbon Fiber,” was honored with the 2012 J.H. "Jud" Hall Composites Manufacturing Award on March 14 in Mesa, Ariz., during SME’s Composites Manufacturing 2012 event. As president of DeVault and Associates, he has extensive knowledge of the carbon-fiber industry. Previously, DeVault was an executive at Aldila Materials Technology Corp. and at Fiberite Inc. Before joining Fiberite, he spent three years at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency planning and implementing a strategy to reduce the cost of polymer-matrix-composite structures. Earlier in DeVault’s career, he was president of the Composite Products Group, Hercules Aerospace Co. — the largest supplier of graphite materials to DoD and a major manufacturer of composite structures. DeVault has been a member of the Suppliers of Advanced Composite Materials Association, the Society for the Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering and the American Defense Preparedness Association. He received the SACMA Material Leadership Award in 1996. DeVault holds a bachelor’s and a master’s in physics and mathematics from Baylor University in 1960 and 1962, respectively.

The Small Company Award was given to Encore Composite Structures Inc. (Brea, Calif.); the Large Company Award was given to The Boeing Co. (Seattle). These two awards are presented annually, and were created to recognize two companies, one large and one small, that have excelled in manufacturing products made from advanced composites materials.
