What is Reshoring? Reshoring is the opposite of offshoring, or simply put, bringing manufacturing back to the United States or keeping it here in the first place.
The Reshoring Initiative, found at www.reshorenow.org was founded by Harry Moser in 2010, as a platform to educate companies on the true Total Cost of Ownership of offshoring manufacturing. This initiative documents the benefits of sourcing goods within the United States.
Harry Moser was President of Agie Charmilles for 22 years, and was inducted into the Industry Week Hall of Fame in 2010. He has spoken in front of Congress on Reshoring and is requested to present his TCO information by Manufacturing Associations, Trade Shows, User Groups and more.
According to a 2009 Archstone Consulting survey, 60% of OEMs and manufacturers use "rudimentary total cost models" which often ignore 20% of the costs of offshoring. Additionally, current models do not take into consideration wage inflation currently happening in many common offshore countries.
Why Reshore? Companies might reshore for many reasons, including:
- Reduce pipeline and surge inventory impacts on JIT operations;
- Improve the quality and consistency of inputs;
- Cluster manufacturing near R&D facilities, which actually enhances innovation;
- Reduce IP and regulatory compliance risk;
- And, most importantly to reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
