The processing techniques for ceramics greatly depend on the characteristics of the raw materials. To organize a discussion of techniques, three categories of materials will be used: glasses, clays, and crystalline ceramic powders. Glass manufacturing begins with molten glass at approximately 2,200° F (1,204° C). Then, a variety of techniques are used. Manufacturing clay products involves processes such as casting, plastic forming, and dry powder pressing.
