Too many companies worldwide fail to make an appropriate financial investment in improvement tools to eliminate non-value-added activities or emphasize zero-free quality attributes. Today, investing in quality improvement tools should be considered equally important to investment in equipment and machinery. The absence of continuous improvement efforts to enhance quality issues in business operations that equalize or exceed customer expectations could mean that companies are unlikely to survive the fierce global competition. To reach world-class performance levels, businesses must find better ways to direct their corporate resource and efforts. One such approach is six sigma. This paper presents an overview of six-sigma philosophy with reference to the methodology and its benefits to companies. Author: S. Arunachalam (University of East London)
