Holistically, the Toyota Production System (TPS) has been proven to work in companies across many industries. But invariably, many companies have taken their own steps to re-invent it — picking and choosing certain concepts à la carte, which results in a less effective and disjointed version of TPS — one that will only deliver limited results. To aid companies in the proper application of TPS, the author’s Work Smart Management System (WSMS) provides a logical and simple approach. Kaizen is continuous improvement; thus it never really ends. However, there are other complementary lean tools, which when used in parallel with kaizen events, strengthen a company even more. World-class companies have many of the tools discussed here in their repertoires.
