THIS PAPER DESCRIBES A CONTINUOUS EXTRUSION FORMING PROCESS FOR METALS WHICH HAS BEEN DEVELOPED AT THE UKAEA, SPRINGFIELDS LABORATORIES. THE PRINCIPLE IS BASED ON THE FRICTIONAL GRIP WHICH EXISTS BETWEEN THE FEEDSTOCK AND ITS EXTRUSION CONTAINER. THE CONTAINER IN THIS CASE IS IN THE SHAPE OF A GROOVE WHICH IS CUT INTO THE PERIPHERY OF A ROTATING WHEEL. THE FEEDSTOCK IS PLACED INTO THIS GROOVE, AND IS HELD IN BY A STATIONARY SHOE. A STOP OR ABUTMENT, WITH A DIE ORIFICE, IS PLACED INTO THE GROOVE AND HELD BY THE STATIONARY SHOE. EXTRUSION OCCURS WHEN THE WHEEL IS ROTATED. TWELVE MONTHS' EXPERIMENTAL EXPERIENCE OF EXTRUDING ALUMINUM IN A CONFORM MACHINE IS ALSO RELATED.
