Automation for the handling and insertion of O-ring seals during assembly is often an unreliable process. To facilitate automated O-ring feeding and installation a bowl feeder and a pneumatic insertion device were designed to work along with a robot in General Motors' Saginaw Vanguard Plant. This particular manufacturing cell will install an O-ring onto a CV joint housing. The entire operation of the cell is described. Deneb, a robot work cell simulation tool, verified clearances, reaches, and cycle time. A double-tooled end effector meets cycle time requirements, recommendations primarily in the area of design for manufacture are made for future projects. The cell achieves a simulation cycle time of 36 seconds which is within the factory cycle time.
