Mi-Light Photonics Industry Scholarships

Michigan’s photonics industry cluster awards scholarships to four academic institutions

Ann Arbor, MI – Mi-Light, the Michigan photonics industry cluster, announced the funding and award of $5,000 in scholarships to four in-state academic institutions. Baker College (Flint, MI), Grand Valley State University (Grand Rapids, MI), Michigan Technological University (Houghton, MI) and Northwestern Michigan College (Traverse City, MI). Each college or university was allocated $1,250 in funds to be awarded to students enrolled in a photonics programs.

Michelle Stock, Chair of Mi-Light“A growing, educated workforce is required for the photonics industry to continue to expand. We see it as one of the major benefits of membership that we can connect companies with the institutions that are generating this new talent, which allows them input into the skills that are taught to best suit their workforce requirements”, said Michelle Stock, Chair of Mi-Light.

Baker College started a new program in Photonics and Laser Technology in the fall of 2013. “Photonics is impacting our lives in so many positive ways”, said Dr. Anca Sala, Dean of Engineering and Technology at Baker, “and working in this exciting, growing field is a great career choice for students. We are grateful for the Mi-Light scholarship and the support it will provide to students.”

The school of engineering at Grand Valley State University offers courses on Fiber Optics and Photovoltaic Systems for undergraduate and graduate students, respectively. “Photonics is an active research field and one of the many fast growing industries,” said Dr. Heidi Jiao, Professor of Electrical Engineering at GVSU, “The Mi-Light scholarship will provide support to students who are interested in pursuing a career in this exciting field.”

The college of electrical and computer engineering (ECE) within Michigan Tech offers an undergraduate concentration in the area of photonics. “The Mi-Light Scholarship will bring exposure and increased awareness of the field to our student population, demonstrating the growing importance of the photonics industry within the state of Michigan,” said Dr. Christopher Middlebrook, Associate Professor of ECE at MTU.

Northwestern Michigan College offers a photonics specialization as part of their EngineeringTechnology Degree. Ed Bailey, the College’s Technical Division Director believes the photonics industry represents the next high growth technical program for the state of Michigan, and the support of students through scholarships will ensure a trained workforce for the industry’s technical requirements.
